The day was cool, the water cold, the river high. It was another fun trip down this sections of the American river. The weather was just right for canoeing but not good for getting wet. We shortened the trip by starting at Sunrise Park. At the San Juan rapids we stopped for lunch, and played on the water. Well, most stayed on the water. Some of the kids tubed down the rapids and Vic Chaney went over while making a second attempt down the harder section of the rapids. He had some dry clothe to change into for the rest of the trip.
The weather gradually turned cooler and cloudy until it started to sprinkle towards the end of the trip. Since we did not have far to go and people were paddling, everyone was warm and comfortable. Then on one of the last turn of the river, after negotiating two sets of rapids without a problem, Bill and Maryjean dumped their canoe in the middle of the river. Due to the speed of the river, there was not much that could be done until we it straightened out and they could swim the canoe over to the side. Although the water was cool, the life jackets provide some thermal protection. Or was it the adrenalin. Anyway we got back on the river with the takeout point at Grist Mill only a quarter of a mile downriver.
